On February 2, 2009 at 12:15 PM a neighbor observed a black male in his late 20s in the backyard of 680 NE 172 Terrace. She believed he was trying to break into the home and he did in fact break in. The neighbor called 9-1-1. MDPD officers were working a multi-agency truancy operation to keep youthful offenders on their toes when the call went out. A total of 22 officers responded and quickly established a perimeter. The primary (identifiable) officers responsible for the arrest were:
Officer Omar Manresa, Officer Charlie Sirois, and Sergeant Erick Gonzalez.
The burglar was arrested. He was on probation.
Congratulations to our neighbor for quickly and appropriately getting involved when she observed a situation that appeared to be a burglary. Congratulations to Miami-Dade and NMB officers for their rapid and well orchestrated response leading to the arrest of the suspect. This was another beautiful example of neighbors and the police working as a team with the criminal being the odd man out.
Major Jeter said:
•“This is just another fine example of inter-agency cooperation and how well we work and respond to neighborhood crime concerns. NMBPB and MDPD enjoy a great cooperative relationship and jurisdictional boundary issues do not overshadow our ability to communicate and work effectively together.
•Crime is on a downward trend, despite this incident and a very challenging economic climate.
•Despite the economy, both NMBPD and MDPD remain well-staffed and well-prepared to address community crime concerns.
Chief Rafael Hernandez and I remain committed to providing the highest levels of effective community policing.”
Together we will make a difference.
